Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre is medium brown and has some lightly raised veins present. The seams are smooth and both tapered ends are well finished. There are two bands, with the primary being the traditional design for the brown version of the 10th Anniversary and the second being the traditionally used white and gold Capa Especial band. The aroma from the cigar is a fairly light earthiness both from the wrapper and the foot. The pre-light draw brings a mix of cedar and floral notes along with a mid-level spiciness on my lips.
Seth: This Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre is really a beautifully constructed cigar. Great looking figurado with a very rich aroma. Lots of earth, stewed stone fruit and some barnyard with ammonia. Wrapper has a nice Colorado Maduro coloring, and the cigar is slightly firm in hand. Small to medium sized veins throughout.
John: The Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre comes in cellophane and has a UPC sticker with the cigar information which tears when the cellophane is opened. The cigar has a perfecto shape and is double banded. The primary band indicates ‘Tatuaje Miami Tattoo 10’ and the secondary band indicates ‘Capa Especial’. I weighed the cigar at 11.8 grams and measured the humidity with the HumidiMeter Pro at 61.1%. For aromas, I am getting moss, clover, earth and tobacco. From the foot, I am getting earth and hay.
Jiunn: The Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre has a Colorado Maduro wrapper shade showing nice even traces of toothiness. Veins are well pressed, seams tight, bunch and roll even and the tapered head is well wrapped and capped. Pre-light aromas tell of heavy, damp hay and grassiness.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with toasted cedar, earth and mild black pepper. At a half inch in, some mustiness joins the profile. The retrohale is toasted cedar, earth, mustiness and mild black pepper. At an inch in, the mustiness has picked up a bit. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with the mustiness a bit behind and the black pepper in the background. The strength was slightly below medium.
Seth: The first third starts out with a nice rich earth and tobacco profile. Some stone fruit qualities along with some sweet and red pepper spices. Cocoa and coffee notes as well. Medium to medium-full in strength and body.
John: My initial experience is spicy earth, dry wood to follow and then the combination of everything carrying into the post draw. Some delayed pepper comes through on the post draw to linger between each puff. As the first third settles in, some underlying tobacco sweetness is present. By the bottom half, some cinnamon comes into the retrohale.
Jiunn: The first third provides a tasty combination of sweet cedar and game/meatiness. Retrohaling teases out dried red pepper spice but also amplifies the sweetness and creaminess of roasted nuts. The finish shows lasting leather tannins and cedar. Strength and body is medium.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, the earth takes a slight lead over the toasted cedar. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and earth with some light mustiness. At an inch in, the black pepper picks up a bit. As the third comes to a close, the earth is just ahead of the toasted cedar and the mustiness and black pepper are a bit further behind. The strength bumped up to medium.
Seth: The second third delivers that rich earth and barnyard quality with fruit and sweet pepper spice notes. There are some tobacco and wood qualities as well, and a bit of mineral notes on the finish. Medium to medium-full in strength and body.
John: My initial flavor impressions here are cinnamon and earth with sweetness on the finish. Some mildly tannic wood settles into the post draw. The profile remains consistent and stable as the second third progresses.
Jiunn: Creamy and meaty. Sounds weird, but in a cigar, I’ll take creamy and meaty all day long. There’s a greater sense of sweetness coming off roasted nuts as well. Like the first third, the second third continues to impress. Strength and body remains medium.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the toast level becomes pretty heavy. At a quarter inch in, a minty vegetal note joins in. The retrohale is now just toasted cedar and earth. As the cigar wraps up, the minty vegetal note is just ahead of the earth and heavily toasted cedar with mustiness and black pepper now in the background. The strength bumped up to slightly above medium.
Seth: The final third delivers a continuation of the second third with more mineral and harsh earth notes. Very little stone fruit qualities in this third. Barnyard and sweet spices. Tobacco as well with a medium-full finish in strength and body.
John: Some mild bread on the retrohale here, which becomes pushed down under wood. Baking spices settle around medium strength in the retrohale as the last third progresses. Earth joins the post draw finish by the halfway mark.
Jiunn: The final third drops a level in enjoyment as the profile condenses down to mainly leather tannins and cedar. Much of the creaminess and meatiness is lost at this point. Strength and body remains medium.

Burn

Aaron: The burn line was straight throughout, but the cigar went out twice in the final third, which I believe caused the degradation in the final third.
Seth: Very good burn from start to finish.
John: The burn was straight to start, with some unevenness through the end of the first third. The burn straightened out and remained that way for the rest of the review.
Jiunn: Burn performance was perfect. Even burn, ample smoke production, tight ashes and cool burning temperature.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was a bit tighter than I prefer, but didn’t seem to cause any issue with the smoking experience.
Seth: Nice draw from beginning to end.
John: The initial draw was 2-1/2 to 3 notches into the resistant spectrum. I often find this to be the case with a perfecto vitola, and many times it will open once it gets about a half of an inch in. In this case, the draw remained at the same level for the rest of the review.
Jiunn: Draw performance was on point, providing the ideal balance between air flow and resistance.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with toasted cedar, earth and mild black pepper. Some mustiness joined in fairly quickly. The second third saw the earth take a slight lead in the profile and the pepper picked up a bit. The final third saw the toast level become heavy and a minty vegetal note join in and then take the lead in the profile. The Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre had an average flavor profile through the first two thirds, focused around toasted cedar, earth, mustiness and black pepper. The final third dropped a level as the toast became heavy and the minty vegetal note overpowered all of the other components. This wasn’t all that enjoyable of an experience, and I hope the others had a better experience, but as it sits, definitely not a cigar I’d return to.
Seth: I was disappointed with the Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre. I can’t believe it’s been ten years since Capa Especial either. The wrapper just didn’t pop like a good Ecuadorian Sumatra, but was more mineral forward and flavors were muddled. The vitola is great, and I imagine the filler blend is solid, but the wrapper seems to bring this cigar down. Would have preferred a good Nicaraguan or Ecuadorian Habano.
John: The Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre had pleasant flavor combinations for the entire review, and I found the profile to be balanced. Unfortunately, I didn’t find that the flavor combinations elevated the profile or engaged me in a way to make the cigar stand out. The burn was perfect and the draw had some resistance to it. I really liked the vitola format and the price point is quite attractive. Given that Tatuaje has a very long list of very good cigars to choose from, it’s unlikely I’d return to this again. Total smoking time was 1 hour and 39 minutes.
Jiunn: The Ecuador Sumatra variation of the 10th Anniversary was a good choice. The profile for most of the smoking experience was an enjoyable one, giving sweet cedar, game/meatiness and plenty of roasted nut creaminess. There’s also something special about a perfecto in which it’s enticing to look at, especially following its burn line. More of this Tatuaje 10th Anniversary Capa Especial Belle Encre please.
