Pre-light Experience

The Arturo Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8 Sun Grown is mostly covered as there is the traditional design for the primary band in red and gold with the lower portion being black for this cigar. From there, a cedar sleeve runs to the foot and has a black ribbon at the end. After sliding off the sleeve and ribbon, a medium brown wrapper with some distinct veins is visible. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. The aroma from the wrapper above the primary band is primarily earth with a bit of cedar, but the wrapper that was under the sleeve is obviously cedar forward. The foot brings musty cedar and light earth. The pre-light draw is airy cedar with a bit of spice cake.

First Third

The cigar begins with toasted cedar and a slightly sweet baking spice. At a half inch in, the smoke is pretty chewy. The retrohale is toasted cedar with a bit of the baking spice supporting it. At three quarters of an inch in, a light meatiness joins the profile. At an inch and a half in, the meatiness moves a bit ahead of the baking spice. As the third comes to a close, the baking spice and meatiness are now even, but a bit behind the toasted cedar up front. The strength was right at medium.

Second Third

As the second third begins, the baking spice and meatiness both close the gap a bit to the toasted cedar. At a half inch in, the meatiness takes a bit of a step back. The retrohale is now toasted cedar with some decently zingy baking spice. At an inch in, the baking spice is now even with the toasted cedar up front. At an inch and a half in, the meatiness, increases a bit. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar and baking spice are even up front, with meatiness in the middle of the profile. The strength bumped up to slightly above medium.

Final Third

As the final third begins, the baking spice drops back a fair amount and the toasted cedar gains some staleness and bitterness. At a half inch in, the meatiness departs. The retrohale is now just toasted cedar. At an inch and a quarter in, the toast level increases a bit. As the cigar wraps up, the toasted cedar is up front with baking spice in the middle and some wood staleness and bitterness in the background. The strength remained at slightly above medium.

Burn

The burn was straight throughout and the ash held on inch and a quarter increments.

Draw

The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.

Overall

The cigar began with toasted cedar and a slightly sweet baking spice. A light meatiness joined a bit later. The second third saw the meatiness drop back a fair amount and the baking spice became even with the toasted cedar up front. The final third saw the meatiness depart and some wood staleness and bitterness join in. The construction was perfect. The Arturo Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8 Sun Grown had a nice profile through the first tow thirds with the toasted cedar, baking spice and meatiness with a nice chewy smoke. The final third took a step back as the meatiness departed and some wood staleness and bitterness joined in. It’s nice coming back to some of these long standing lines that deliver with a very approachable price point. I’d easily come back to this cigar in the future.
