Pre-light Experience
The wrapper on the Arturo Fuente Casa Cuba Doble Tres is light brown and has a network of fine veins. The seams are smooth and the head is well finished. The band is gold, red, white and black and carries the line name. The aroma from the wrapper is wood, earth and anise, while the foot brings a mix of anise and cedar. The pre-light draw brings cedar and leather, with light amounts of anise and dry earth, along with a mild spiciness on my lips.
First Third
The cigar begins with heavily toasted cedar along with some earth and black pepper. At a half inch in, the earth increases to right behind the toasted cedar and the black pepper picks up a bit as well. At three quarters of an inch in, the body has really picked up, along with a light creaminess joining the profile. The retrohale is toasted cedar and earth, with mild black pepper. As the third comes to a close, the heavily toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth, with black pepper just in front of the middle of the profile and some creaminess in the background. The strength was right at medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the black pepper mellows a bit. At a half inch in, the black pepper picks back up but has a bit of dullness to it. The retrohale is now creamy, toasted cedar with earth and mild black pepper. At an inch in, the black pepper mellows a fair amount. As the third comes to a close, the heavily toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth, with black pepper just behind the middle of the profile and some creaminess in the background. The strength remained at medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, the earth becomes even with the toasted cedar up front. At a half inch in, a vegetal note joins the profile. The retrohale is now back to toasted cedar, earth and light black pepper. At three quarters of an inch in, the black pepper increases a bit. As the cigar wraps up, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with black pepper in the middle of the profile, a vegetal note just behind and some creaminess in the background. The strength remained at medium.
Burn
The burn line was straight throughout, but through the first half of the cigar, it would unexpectedly go out every half to three quarters of an inch, requiring five re-lights. Through the second half, it only went out twice.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with heavily toasted cedar along with some earth and black pepper. The earth and black pepper increased fairly quickly. Later, a light creaminess joined in. The second third saw the black pepper mellow a bit and then picked back up but had some dullness. Later, the pepper mellowed a fair amount. The final third saw the earth become even with the toasted cedar up front. Then, a vegetal note joined the profile and the black pepper increased a bit. The burn issues were a big problem, with it unexpectedly going out seven times. Overall, the Arturo Fuente Casa Cuba Doble Tres had a fairly average flavor profile, focused around heavily toasted cedar, earth and black pepper. The burn was a big detractor and I have to assume it hindered the flavor profile at some level. I’d be open to coming back to this for a better burning example to see what the flavor profile is really like, but this just wasn’t a great experience.
