Pre-light Experience
The wrapper on the Tatuaje Escasos H is a light golden brown with hints of green and carries some raised, knotty veins. The seams are a bit raised and the head is well finished. There are two bands, with the primary being the traditional Brown Label design. The secondary is gold and black and denotes the line. The aroma from the wrapper is a mix of cedar, hay and earth, while the foot brings cedar and bread. The pre-light draw brings musty cedar, dusty earth and a bit of rosemary.
First Third
The cigar begins with a lightly musty and creamy toasted cedar along with some dry earth and a bit of black pepper. At a half inch in, the dry earth increases a bit. The retrohale is toasted cedar and dry earth with mild black pepper. At an inch and a half in, the mustiness and creaminess of the toasted cedar both increase a bit, along with the black pepper. As the third comes to a close, the musty and creamy toasted cedar is up front, with dry earth a bit behind and the black pepper just behind the middle of the profile. The strength was slightly below medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the creaminess departs from the toasted cedar. At a half inch in, a chalky floral note joins the profile. At an inch in, the dry earth increases a bit more. The retrohale remains toasted cedar and dry earth with mild black pepper. At an inch and a half in, the chalkiness increases and loses the floral note. As the third comes to a close, the musty, toasted cedar is just ahead of the dry earth, with black pepper just behind the middle of the profile and the chalkiness just behind it. The strength remained at slightly below medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, some creaminess rejoins as its own component. At a half inch in, the dry earth becomes even with the toasted cedar up front. At three quarters of an inch in, the toast level becomes quite heavy. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and earth, with light black pepper and some creaminess. At an inch and a quarter in, a fair amount of wood bitterness joins the profile. As the cigar wraps up, the musty, heavily toasted cedar is even with the dry earth up front. The black pepper, chalkiness, creaminess and wood bitterness are just behind the middle of the profile. The strength bumped up to medium.
Burn
The burn was straight throughout and the ash held on in one inch increments.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with a lightly musty and creamy toasted cedar along with some dry earth and a bit of black pepper. The dry earth increased a bit fairly quickly. Later, the creaminess and mustiness along with black pepper increased a bit. The second third has the creaminess depart. Then, a chalky floral note joined in. Later, the dry earth increases a bit more and the chalkiness increases while losing the floral note. The final third saw some creaminess rejoin and the dry earth became even with the toasted cedar up front. Then, the toast level became pretty heavy. Later, some wood bitterness joined in. The Tatuaje Escasos H had an average flavor profile throughout, focused around toasted cedar and dry earth. While the flavor profile was smooth with lower strength, the dry earth kind of dampened the other flavors, which I believe didn’t allow it to shine as it could have. Not a cigar that really excites me and not something I’d likely to return to.
