Aroma
Upfront, I’m getting quite a bit of bourbon influence with a plethora of vanilla, maple and caramel. Non-traditional bourbon notes such as faint anise and exotic woods are also present.
Flavor
Peanuts, dense bread and sandalwood are immediately noticed. Further, there’s also anise and peaches.
Balance
Incredible balance given the 59.4% never gets in the way of the flavor profile. Instead, it actually gives it a nice body and warmth.
Finish
The 59.4% ABV is warm and inviting to a finish that lingers with peanuts, anise and dry wood.
Overall
I purchased this bottle at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in April of 2015. This is back when most did not have much understanding or respect for Kavalan. Fast forward to now, I’m glad to see the distillery has gained much respect and accolades. In terms of the Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Cask Cask Strength Single Barrel, this was a warm and inviting, not overly powerful whisky showing good complexities.
