Personal Spirit Review: Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Cask Cask Strength Single Barrel

Personal Spirit Review: Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Cask Cask Strength Single Barrel

I purchased this bottle at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in April of 2015. Fast forward to now, I'm glad to see the distillery has gained much respect and accolades. In terms of the Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Cask Cask Strength Single Barrel, this was a warm and inviting, not overly powerful whisky showing good complexities.

Personal Spirit Review: Four Roses 2017 Limited Edition Small Batch

Personal Spirit Review: Four Roses 2017 Limited Edition Small Batch

It's been a while since I've had this type of richness in mouthfeel and flavor in a Four Roses LE. No doubt, the Four Roses 2017 Limited Edition Small Batch is one of the top notch Four Roses I've had (and that's including private picks and other years' LE's).

Personal Spirit Review: Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 Year

Personal Spirit Review: Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 Year

The Elijah Craig Single Barrel 18 Year is one of the epitomes of flavor and balance. And to do this with such an old whiskey makes it that much harder and brings a wow factor. Heaven Hill knocked this one out of the park proofing it down just right to 90 proof.

Personal Spirit Review: Springbank 15 Year Old

Personal Spirit Review: Springbank 15 Year Old

After years of enjoying Springbank in a good variety of the aged expressions (10, 15, 18, 21), the Springbank 15 Year Old continues to be the best valued. The only gripe I have about the 15 year is the lack of a complex finish. With all that said, this is a no brainer of a pick up.

Team Spirit Review: Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 21 Year Old

Team Spirit Review: Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 21 Year Old

For such a lower proofed whiskey of 86 proof, it's amazing how much fullness of flavors there are in the Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 21 Year Old (especially the coffee and dark chocolate). It really is a shame on the high demand of Japanese whisky since the MSRP of $330 is quite high (and that's if you can even find it at MSRP). But it is absolutely worth every penny.

Personal Spirit Review: Heaven Hill 6 Year Old Green Label

Personal Spirit Review: Heaven Hill 6 Year Old Green Label

Overall, the experience with the Heaven Hill 6 Year Old Green Label can be categorized as young, a bit unrefined and lacking in finish. With all that said, I still think it's worth the incredibly budget friendly price of ~$10.

Personal Spirit Review: Old Grand-Dad 114

Personal Spirit Review: Old Grand-Dad 114

Given, at times, the overwhelming alcohol heat and rye spice on the nose and palate of the Old Grand-Dad 114, it's hard to find much else, needing to dig pretty deep. So in terms of the amount of enjoyment I got out of this bourbon, it was decent/average. The value proposition however is huge.

Personal Spirit Review: Nikka Whisky From The Barrel (U.S.)

Personal Spirit Review: Nikka Whisky From The Barrel (U.S.)

Overall, the Nikka Whisky From The Barrel (U.S.) is a delicious youthful, vibrant and full flavored whisky hitting all the right flavor spectrums (wood, smoke, spices, sweetness, fruit). The only minor gripe I have would be to have a more complex and deeper finish. But then again, at $65 MSRP, there really isn't anything else you can ask for. This one is well worth stocking up on.
