Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Emilio Audiophile 2023 Robusto is between medium and dark brown and has some lightly raised veins present. The seams are pretty smooth and the caps decently applied. The band is metallic white that fades to green along with some pink, silver and black and denotes the brand and line. The aroma from the wrapper is dark earth with some cocoa powder. The foot brings cedar and earth. The pre-light draw brings cedar, barbecue smokiness and mild spiciness.
John: The Emilio Audiophile 2023 Robusto comes in cellophane and has a UPC sticker on the main body of the cellophane to remain intact when opened. There is a single Emilio audiophile band. I weighed the cigar at 12.9 grams and the humidity as measured by a HumidiMeter Pro was 61.2%. Aromas from the wrapper included barnyard and earth. From the foot, I was getting faint, sweet tobacco and hay.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with a toasted, slightly stale oak, earth and mild baking spice. At a quarter inch in, the staleness of the oak transitions to smokiness. At a half inch in, the baking spice transitions to black pepper. The retrohale is toasted, smoky oak with earth and lightly zingy black pepper. At an inch and a quarter, the black pepper mellows. As the third comes to a close, the toasted, smoky oak is up front, with earth right behind and black pepper a fair distance behind. The strength was slightly below medium.
John: The initial flavor impressions are sweet tobacco, a wood center and an earthy finish. Creaminess develops on the retrohale out of the gate. Some medium strength lingering leather begins to settle on the post draw as the first third progresses. Not long after, a mild, dry wood also joins the post draw. By the halfway point, a light plus strength musty tobacco comes into the finish.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, the black pepper is barely holding on in the background. At a half inch in, the black pepper is completely gone. The retrohale is now toasted, smoky oak and earth with light black pepper. As the third comes to a close, the toasted, smoky oak is a bit behind the earth. The strength remained at slightly below medium.
John: Creamy, sweet tobacco gets the second third going, with a dry wood in the center and a mix of wood and earth on the finish. The profile is consistent moving to halfway with no additional flavors or strength changes. A tobacco sweetness comes through on the finish at the halfway point.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the toast level picks up and the oak takes on a bit of dampness. At a third f an inch in, a light vegetal mintiness joins the profile. The retrohale is now toasted, smoky oak and earth. At three quarters of an inch in, some mustiness joins the profile. As the cigar wraps up, it is musty, toasted and smoky oak up front with earth a bit behind and vegetal mintiness in the background. The strength remained at slightly below medium.
John: Sweet tobacco is the initial flavor impression in the final third, with earth to follow and then lingering on the post draw. As the last third settles in, a light plus vegetal moves into the center of the profile. Earth is leading each puff as the cigar progressed and for the remainder of the third. By the halfway point, a medium strength earth is dominating the post draw.

Burn

Aaron: The burn was a bit wavy at times, but never needed any intervention. The ash held on in inch and a quarter increments.
John: Not surprisingly, since these cigars come out of Fabrica Oveja Negra, the burn is perfect through the review.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was slightly tighter than I prefer, but didn’t cause any issues with the smoking experience.
John: As above, the draw is perfect, right in the ideal zone between open and resistant.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with a toasted, slightly stale oak, earth and mild baking spice. The staleness transitioned to smokiness fairly quickly and the baking spice transitioned to black pepper a bit later. The second third saw the black pepper depart. The final third saw some mustiness and a vegetal mintiness join in. The Emilio Audiophile 2023 Robusto had an average flavor profile throughout, with a pretty basic combination of components. There was some transitioning, and the smokiness was a nice touch, but didn’t do anything to make the overall experience memorable. I wouldn’t see myself coming back to this one.
John: The Emilio Audiophile 2023 Robusto was pleasant through the review, with the most interesting flavor combinations for me coming in the first third. The second third didn’t have enough engaging flavor components to elevate it from average to good. The draw and burn were flawless, but as Fabrica Oveja Negra tends to be on point with construction it doesn’t come as a surprise. The price point is pretty reasonable for the market, and the profile will probably appeal to a lot of people who already gravitate towards the offerings from Oveja Negra Brands. For me, I’d be more inclined to grab something from Black Works Studio or the core of Black Label Trading Co. Total smoking time was a value forward 1 hour and 57 minutes.
