Appearance

The Modern Times Fortunate Islands is a white can with name font in yellow gold lettering, with three orange and copper lines at the bottom of the can. The beer pours a golden wheat ale color, with significant amounts of carbonation and a medium thick white, fluffy head.

Aroma

The aroma is interesting with a varied combination of tropical citrus, hops and buried sweet grapefruit.

Flavor

This immediately comes across as a mashup of IPA and wheat ale styles. Each sip comes across as two separate tasting identities, with the hoppy IPA flavors first and the sweet wheat ale after.

Balance

The flavors are not balanced at all, as the flavors exist as two distinct profiles.

Finish

The tropical citrus notes have a very short finish as it gives way to the wheat ale. The wheat ale has a light to medium length finish.

Overall

The Modern Times Fortunate Islands is a mash up of two different styles, and I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy it. I’m always eager to try new beers that push the style envelope, and this beer does a great job of it.
