Appearance

The Modern Times City Of The Dead Nitro is in a bright purple tall can with white writing. The beer pours dark with a medium, thick, fluffy head.

Aroma

The aroma is freshly ground coffee beans and underneath that, cocoa nibs.

Flavor

The first few sips produce a creamy, sweet mouthfeel. The salt and bitterness of almonds comes through at the end of each sip. Chocolate is present later, as the beer is warming, along with the coffee from the aroma.

Balance

The coffee, chocolate and salt blend pleasantly together. No one flavor dominates or pushes other flavors aside.

Finish

The finish is fresh brewed coffee with cream. As the beer progresses, and warms up, salt comes through at the same pace as chocolate. Some bitterness comes through and it’s amplified by the salt.

Overall

The Modern Times City Of The Dead Nitro sets a reliable benchmark for what a good nitro stout should be. Coffee, almonds, chocolate, salt, all balanced, along with an enjoyable sweet creamy mouthfeel that anchors everything together. This one is sure to be in my regular rotation.
