Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Camacho Connecticut Robusto is medium tan with a hint of green is some areas and has some lightly raised, knotty veins. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. The band is light orange and black and carries the brand name and line. The aroma from the wrapper is a faint mix of hay and earth while the foot brings a fuller version of the same combination. The pre-light draw brings a mix of hay and graham cracker along with a very mild spiciness on my lips.
Matt: Very firm pack on this Camacho Connecticut Robusto. Nice heft in the hand for a robusto. Slight oil sheen to the Connecticut shade wrapper. Even though the pack is very firm, still has plenty of airflow for a good draw. Light hay flavor on the cold draw and same aromas off the foot.
Will: The Connecticut Shade wrapper of the Camacho Connecticut Robusto had a slightly weathered, slight brown color to it. There was a light sheen of oil on the wrapper. The surface of the wrapper had several prominent visible veins. From the foot, the aroma delivered a mix of sweet cedar and wood. The cold draw delivered a mix of leather and cedar.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with toasted cedar, dusty earth and mild black pepper. At a half inch in, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the dusty earth and the overall profile is quite smooth. The retrohale brings a slightly fuller version of the same profile. At an inch and a quarter, some hay joins the profile. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the dusty earth, with hay just past the middle of the profile and some mild black pepper in the background. The strength was mild-medium.
Matt: Dry earth and cedar are the most prominent flavors upon lighting. Light floral spice through the retrohale. Very faint honeysuckle sweetness on the palate. Getting to the end of the first third, the honeysuckle becomes more reminiscent of vanilla cream. Slightly creamy smoke texture. Mild-Medium.
Will: The first third of the Camacho Connecticut Robusto delivered notes of cedar, unsalted peanut, cream citrus and bakers spice. The citrus had a slight astringent quality to it and became the primary note. On the retrohale was an additional layer of white pepper. The flavors delivered were medium-bodied countered by medium strength.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, the hay transitions into a construction paper note. The retrohale now has the earth leading the toasted cedar along with some construction paper. At a half inch in, the black pepper picks up a bit. At an inch in, the earth loses the dustiness and becomes even with the toasted cedar up front. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front with construction paper and black pepper just behind the middle of the profile. The strength remained mild-medium.
Matt: Vanilla cream along with peanut are the two notes that are most discernible in the second third. Dry earth is non-existent at this point but the cedar remains as an undertone. Light floral spice through the retrohale. Medium body. Long finish. Creamy smoke texture.
Will: The start of the second third continues with the notes of cedar, unsalted peanut, citrus and bakers spice. White pepper emerged on the tongue and replaced the creaminess that was present in the first third. The citrus wasn’t quite as prominent, but it still had astringent qualities to it. As for the strength and body, there was an increase in intensity with the flavors processing to medium to full-bodied in the second half countered by medium strength.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the toasted cedar and earth increase in fullness. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and earth, with black pepper and very mild construction paper. At three quarters of an inch in, the construction paper becomes pretty light. At an inch in, the construction paper note has departed. The cigar wraps up with toasted cedar and earth even up front and black pepper just behind the middle of the profile. The strength bumped up to slightly below medium.
Matt: Dry earth dominates the flavor profile in the final third. More floral spice through the retrohale but still a manageable amount that’s pleasant enough. Also a lot of cedar beneath the dry earth. Faint honeysuckle sweetness. Peanut completely gone. Medium body. Long finish. Arid smoke texture.
Will: The final third was dominated by notes of earth, white pepper and cedar. There were still some citrus and bakers spice in the background. The strength and body remained medium and medium to full respectively.

Burn

Aaron: The burn was straight throughout and the ash held on in near two inch increments.
Matt: Burn line and combustion were great, never needing a touch-up. Strong ash.
Will: This burn required frequent touch-ups to maintain a straight burn path and straight burn line.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was perfect with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Matt: Great draw with perfect amount of resistance.
Will: The first half had a snug draw. Normally I like a little resistance on the draw, but this was more snug than I preferred. The draw opened up a little more in the second half.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with toasted cedar, dusty earth and mild black pepper. Some hay joined in a bit later. The second third saw the hay transition to construction paper and the pepper picked up a bit. The final third saw the construction paper note depart. Construction was absolutely perfect. The Camacho Connecticut Robusto had an average flavor profile throughout, focused around the toasted cedar and earth. The first two thirds were quite smooth and then lost a bit of that in the final third. Some creaminess would really elevate this blend. Overall, it was a pretty typical Connecticut shade offering. The price point is pretty attractive, so it’s an easy try, but it’s not quite exciting enough to make me want to come back to it with any real frequency.
Matt: Having reviewed this Camacho Connecticut Robusto on my own channel earlier this year, I was happy to see my experience with this particular sample be markedly more enjoyable. If Aaron hadn’t sent this in for me to review, I probably wouldn’t have any other reason to try it again, but I’m glad I did. Nothing mind-blowing about it, but it offered a solid Connecticut experience. Being so widely available, I’d have no problem with recommending this Connecticut offering from Camacho.
Will: Overall, I found the Camacho Connecticut Robusto didn’t really have any wow factor. This cigar had a nice amount of complexity to it, but I didn’t find this helped the overall experience. This is a bolder Connecticut Shade cigar, but there are other bolder Connecticut’s I would go to before this one.
