Pre-light Experience
The wrapper on the El Rey del Mundo Appointment Robusto is light brown with some lumpiness to it and lightly raised veins. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. There are two bands, with the primary being purple and gold and denoting the brand and line. Just below the primary band is a sleeve that runs down to the foot and has a map on it. The aroma from the wrapper is a mix of construction paper and cedar while the foot brings graham cracker, cedar and earth. The pre-light draw also consists of graham cracker, cedar and earth along with a mild spiciness on my lips.
First Third
The cigar begins with toasted cedar, earth, black pepper, construction paper and some chalkiness. At a quarter inch in, the chalkiness becomes very mild. At a half inch in, the black pepper increases a bit. The retrohale is toasted cedar, earth and black pepper. At an inch and a quarter, the toasted cedar, earth and black pepper really ramp up in fullness. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with black pepper a bit behind, some construction paper in the back half and some mild chalkiness in the background. The strength was slightly above medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the construction paper has departed from the profile. At a half inch in, the black pepper mellows a bit. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and earth with mild black pepper. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with the black pepper just ahead of the middle of the profile and some light chalkiness in the background. The strength remained slightly above medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, the toast level increases a bit. At a half inch in, the toast level is now pretty heavy and a light wood bitterness has joined the profile. The retrohale remains toasted cedar and earth with mild black pepper. As the cigar wraps up, the heavily toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with black pepper just ahead of the middle of the profile, wood bitterness just behind the middle of the profile and mild chalkiness in the background.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with toasted cedar, earth, black pepper, construction paper and some chalkiness. Later, the cedar, earth and black pepper ramped up in fullness. The second third saw the construction paper depart and the black pepper mellowed a bit. The final third saw the toast level of the cedar become pretty heavy and some wood bitterness joined in. The construction was absolutely perfect. The El Rey del Mundo Appointment Robusto had an average flavor profile throughout, focused around toasted cedar, earth and black pepper. The supporting notes weren’t all that great. Overall, a pretty average experience and not a cigar I’d see myself returning to.
