Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15 is medium tan and has a couple of raised veins present. The seams are smooth and the tapered head is finished excellently. There are two bands, both in a cream and gold color combination. The primary denotes the line, while the foot denotes the company. The aroma from the wrapper is a mellow hay, while the foot brings a very rich stewed fruit along with cedar. The pre-light draw brings more stewed fruit and cedar along with a mid-level spiciness on my lips.
Seth: Firm in hand, and slightly silky in texture, the Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15 has a wrapper that is between Claro and Colorado. Light reddish hues with that golden wrapper. Small to medium sized veins throughout. Aromas of cedar, cream, hay, soft tobacco and sweet earth.
John: The Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15 comes in cellophane and has a UPC sticker that pulls off with the bottom half when opened. There are two bands, with a primary Flor Selva No. 15 primary band and a Maya Selva Cigars secondary band foot band. I weighed the cigar at 16.5 grams and the humidity as measured by a HumidiMeter Pro was 62.2%. Aromas from the wrapper included sweet, dry wood and hay. Out of the foot, I was detecting sweet raisin, plum and tobacco.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with cedar and a burning paper note. At a quarter inch in, some light earth joins the profile. At three quarters of an inch in, a light chalkiness joins the profile. The retrohale is cedar, burning paper and light earth. At an inch and quarter, the burning paper note has lightened up. As the third comes to a close, the cedar is up front with earth in the middle and light amounts of chalkiness and burning paper in the background. The strength was mild-medium.
Seth: The first third opens up with some nice saltine notes that are paired with some cedar, hay and light grass notes. Bits of white pepper are present along with some tobacco and earth. Light and balanced, the cigar is just under medium in strength and body.
John: My review gets going with sweet bread on the first few puffs, and a mild, spicy wood to finish. Cinnamon comes into the retrohale center and manages to linger well into the finish. I’m consistently getting bread and wood with spicy accents through the remainder of the first third.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, some black pepper joins the profile. At a half inch in, the cedar gains a decent level of toast. The retrohale is now toasted cedar, earth and light black pepper. At an inch and a quarter, the burning paper and chalkiness are barely holding on in the background. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth, with the black pepper a bit further behind and faint amounts of burning paper and chalkiness in the background. The strength bumped up to slightly below medium.
Seth: The second third is fairly similar. Salted wood notes with bits of tobacco, pepper, earth, saltines, cream, cedar and hay. Still under medium in strength and body, but it has picked up some.
John: Medium strength spices step things up in the second third with bread and wood following. The profile is again consistent as it progresses, adding only dry wood on the post draw.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the burning paper and chalkiness have both faded from the flavor profile. At a half inch in, the black pepper mellows a bit. The retrohale remains toasted cedar, earth and light black pepper. At an inch in, a light vegetal note joins the profile. As the cigar wraps up, the toasted cedar is up front with earth right behind, black pepper a bit further behind and light vegetal note in the background. The strength remained at slightly below medium.
Seth: Medium in strength and body, the cigar delivers those saltine, salted wood, cedar, hay, earth and cream qualities. Light pepper notes on the finish.
John: Creamy, sweet wood takes the review into the last third with dry wood still making up the post draw. Hay moves into the center of the flavor profile with light plus earth joining the finish. Sweet wood and hay are leading the cigar by the halfway point as the post draw is defined by dry wood and hay, with mild tannins underneath. Hay is driving the profile through the bottom half.

Burn

Aaron: The burn was fairly wavy throughout and there were four touch-ups required as portions of the wrapper just didn’t want to burn with the rest of the cigar. Smoke production was also on the low side throughout.
Seth: Very good burn from start to finish.
John: The burn is straight through the entire review with the ash holding on at 1-1/4 inch increments.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was slightly tighter than I prefer, but didn’t cause any issues with the smoking experience.
Seth: Very good draw.
John: The draw is perfect, right in the ideal zone between open and resistant.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with cedar and a burning paper note. Some light earth joined in fairly quickly and some chalkiness a bit later. The second third saw some black pepper join and the burning paper and chalkiness were very light. The final third saw the burning paper and chalkiness depart and a light vegetal note join in. A fair amount of touch-ups were needed to keep the wrapper burning in unison. The Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15 had an average flavor profile throughout. Smoke production was pretty low, requiring me to take a few puffs at a time to get a good volume. Overall, there was nothing really exciting going on, and babysitting the burn was a bit disappointing. Not a cigar I’d really see myself coming back to.
Seth: The Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15 is a lovely belicoso. It’s an easy smoke that many could enjoy, but if you are looking for a little more strength, body and complexity in your Connecticut, this will not be your stick. It’s a nice Honduran Connecticut, and the all Honduran blend produces a solid blend, but it does not change throughout. It is consistent. Nice construction, I am interested in smoking the aged No. 15.
John: Maya Selva once again delivers an enjoyable cigar experience with the Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15. The first and second thirds were the most engaging for me, with the last third taking on some hay and wood components that distracted from the other flavors. The burn and draw were both flawless. I would enjoy smoking another Maya Selva Flor de Selva 2023 No. 15, and it will be interesting to contrast this experience against the 2012 offering. Total smoking time was 1 hour and 46 minutes.
