Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela is light brown with some darker spots, along with a few decently raised veins. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. There are two bands, with the primary being the traditional design for the company and the secondary being white with gold lettering, denoting the sub-line. The aroma from the wrapper is a mix of earth and cedar while the foot brings cedar, earth, lightly sweet hay and some smokiness. The pre-light draw brings cedar, a sage like herbalness and some smokiness, along with a mild spiciness on my lips.
Seth: Finished with a wrapper that was somewhere between natural and Colorado in coloring, the Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela had some marbling with medium sized and ugly veins throughout. Silky in texture. Not a great coloring, but that has no impact on how the cigar smokes. Aromas of leather, wood, spices and tobacco.
John: The Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela comes in cellophane and has a UPC sticker with an integrated tear space to remain intact when opened. The cigar is double banded with the Casa 1910 primary band and Teniente Angela as a secondary band in gold cursive against a white background. Aromas from the wrapper included a sweet, yeasty bread, light hay and wood. From the foot was fermented, mossy earth, tobacco, wood and hay.
Jiunn: The Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela has an even Colorado wrapper shade. Veins are well pressed, seams tight, bunch and roll even and head is well wrapped and capped. Aromas from the wrapper tell of hay and barnyard. Aromas from the foot tell of spicy cedar and prunes. Cold draws reveal hay, cedar and mixed nuts.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with oak, earth and a mild black pepper. At a quarter inch in, a light smokiness joins the profile. At a half inch in, the oak gains a toast note. The retrohale is toasted oak, light earth and lightly zingy black pepper. At an inch and a half in, a light chalkiness joins the profile. As the third comes to a close, the profile is toasted oak up front, with earth a bit behind and black pepper, smokiness and chalkiness in the background. The strength was right at medium.
Seth: The first third starts out with some leather, wood, dry earth and spice notes. Lovely barnyard qualities. Medium-full in strength and body. Nice balance.
John: The first few puffs are flavors of sweet hay and graham cracker. The post draw has lingering pepper as the first third settles in. A green wood makes its home on the post draw as the cigar continues to progress. Some time later, a mild chocolate breaks into the retrohale.
Jiunn: The first third’s flavor profile just doesn’t quite get me there. The typical notes of minerals, black pepper spice and cedar are there. Some uniqueness in effervescence, but the note that doesn’t get me there is a mixture of dry tannins and black pepper spice sitting on the tongue. Retrohaling gives deeper pepper but can also sense some cherries. The finish is lengthy with the same dry tannins and black pepper spice. Strength and body is medium.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, the black pepper becomes a bit fuller and the oak is now quite detailed. At a half inch in, a light sage note joins the profile. The retrohale is toasted oak, earth, sage and light black pepper. As the third comes to a close, the toasted oak remains up front with earth a bit behind and black pepper and sage a bit further behind, with smokiness and chalkiness in the background. The strength remained at medium.
Seth: The second third delivers some more complexities and I am getting toast, cinnamon and wood notes up front. Bits of dry earth, pepper and barnyard as well. Coffee and cocoa on the finish. Medium-full in strength and body.
John: The second third begins with chocolate, spices and wood. Graham cracker is the primary flavor driver on the retrohale, as the other flavors slowly join in. Overall, the flavor profile remained quite consistent here both in strength and the list of flavors which lead to an enjoyable second third.
Jiunn: The second third continues to show dominance in dry tannins and black pepper spice. There’s minerals added to this combination in which I can take it or leave it (in other words, it doesn’t enhance the flavor profile). Strength and body remains medium.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the chalkiness increases a bit. At a quarter inch in, the toast level picks up a bit. The retrohale remains toasted oak, earth, sage and light black pepper. At an inch in, the toast has become pretty heavy as the black pepper has departed. As the cigar wraps up, the profile is heavily toasted oak up front with earth a bit behind, sage a bit further behind and light smokiness and chalkiness in the background. The strength bumped up to slightly above medium.
Seth: The final third delivers a flavor profile of cocoa, coffee, leather, toast, wood, cinnamon, pepper spices and earth. A lot going on. Very enjoyable. Dryer, but balanced. Medium-full in strength and body.
John: The last third opens with tannic wood as hay and graham cracker follow. Baking spices take up the center of the retrohale as the first third settles in. A mossy vegetal flavor moves into the center of the flavor profile as the cigar heads towards the halfway point. Tannic wood is light-plus on the finish by the halfway point. By the bottom half, earth is finishing each puff.
Jiunn: The final third is unchanged from the second third. Still heavily geared towards dry tannins, black pepper spice and minerals. For such a longer smoke, at this point, it feels a bit taxing. Strength and body finishes the same medium.

Burn

Aaron: The burn was straight the entire way and the ash held on in near two inch increments.
Seth: Perfect burn throughout.
John: There were some minor issues with the burn as unevenness was present out of the gate, which developed into a canoe and required a touch-up to correct. The burn became uneven again in the second third, requiring a second touch-up. No issues for the remainder of the review.
Jiunn: Burn performance was perfect. Even burn, ample smoke production, tight ashes and cool burning temperature.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Seth: Beautiful draw. Great level of resistance. Had to take your time with this cigar.
John: The draw was at most one notch into the resistant spectrum which puts it in the ideal range for a draw.
Jiunn: Flawless draw, giving the best balance between air flow and resistance.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with oak, earth and a mild black pepper. Some smokiness joined in fairly quickly and the oak gained a toast note. Some chalkiness joined a bit later. The second third saw a sage note join. The final third saw the toast become heavy and the black pepper depart. Construction was absolutely perfect. The Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela started a bit average, but by the second third, moved up a level as the sage note brought everything together. The final third dropped down a level as the toast became heavy. This was an interesting cigar, as the sage note isn’t something I get all that often in a cigar and I enjoyed it. Still not a cigar that has me eager to come back to, but maybe my favorite cigar from the brand thus far.
Seth: I need to smoke the original Casa 1910 again, but this Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela is the best Casa 1910 I have smoked since that cigar. This might actually be the best cigar they have released. Balanced with tons of flavors. You can get all the tobacco nations in the blend. There is depth and complexity. Beautiful construction. Not an attractive cigar, but one that smokes well. I think this would be popular with a large selection of smokers.
John: The Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela was a pleasant review experience with softer flavor combinations than other Casa 1910 offerings. I found the cigar really hit the high water mark in the second third, while the last third was pleasant but didn’t harmonize quite as well for me as the rest of the cigar. The draw was perfect, while the burn required two touch-ups to correct unevenness. I enjoyed the Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela and would smoke this cigar again if I had the opportunity. Total smoking time was 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Jiunn: As indirectly mentioned within each respective third, this Casa 1910 Soldadera Edition Teniente Angela doesn’t fully capture my attention. The overall flavor combination of dry tannins, black pepper spice and minerals is quite a heft to take in for the near two hours of smoking time. For me, the cigar was in desperate need of sweetness. This is a pass for me.
