Pre-light Experience

The wrapper on the VegaFina 1998 Vintage 1 VF 42L is nearly medium brown and has a few raised veins present. The seams are slightly raised and the caps have a few wrinkles in them. There are three bands, with the primary being the traditional white, red and black design for the brand. The secondary band is black and white and denotes the line name while there is a band just shy of the foot that is gold and black and denotes Vintage 1. The aroma from the wrapper is a mix of wood and green hay while the foot brings a slightly smoky wood note. The pre-light draw is musty cedar along with a light green hay note. There is also a mild spiciness on my lips.

First Third

The cigar begins with an even mix of toasted cedar and dry earth. At a half inch in, a light mustiness joins the profile. The retrohale is musty, toasted cedar. At an inch in, the musty, toasted cedar is up front with the dry earth in the background. At an inch and a half, a light chalkiness joins the profile. As the third comes to a close, the profile is musty, toasted cedar up front, chalkiness in the middle and light, dry earth in the background. The strength in this third was mild-medium.

Second Third

As the second third begins, the musty, toasted cedar and chalkiness are now even up front. The retrohale is now an even mix of musty cedar and chalkiness. At an inch and a half in, there have really been no changes to the profile of musty, toasted cedar and chalkiness up front with light, dry earth in the background. The strength in this third remained at mild-medium.

Final Third

The final third continues on with the profile from the second. At a half inch in, the chalkiness takes a slight lead in the profile and there’s a lingering chalkiness that remains on my tongue between draws. The retrohale remains an even mix of musty cedar and chalkiness. At an inch and a quarter, the toast level of the cedar increases and it now takes a slight lead over the chalkiness. The cigar wraps up with an even mix of musty, toasted cedar and chalkiness with light, dry earth holding on in the background. The strength in this third bumped up to slightly below medium.

Burn

The burn was perfect throughout with a tight white ash that held on in two inch increments.

Draw

The draw was slightly tighter than I prefer, but didn’t cause any issues with the smoking experience.

Overall

The flavor profile of the cigar was about as linear as you could get as it was focused around musty, toasted cedar, chalkiness and dry earth. There were some slight transitions to the level of the flavors, but the components remained throughout the smoking experience. Construction was near perfect aside from the slightly tight draw and strength was mild-medium most of the way. The VegaFina 1998 Vintage 1 VF 42L was an average experience throughout as it was a bit dry based on the flavor components. With this being a non-U.S. release, I can see how the flavor/strength combination was setup, but it just wasn’t all that exciting. This vitola isn’t one you see very often and it was fun to smoke. This cigar definitely showed better than the VF 50 that was a U.S. release and we reviewed previously, but it’s still not something I’d really see myself coming back to.
