Introduction

The NewAir 400 Count Cigar Humidor, Climate Controlled with Opti-Temp ($549.95) is the companies largest (current offering) temperature controlled cigar humidor. The unit features Spanish cedar drawers, holding up to 400 cigars, a digital thermostat and LED lighting. Perhaps the biggest selling point is the trademarked Opti-Temp, which heats and cools to maintain the desired temperature. Thus far, I’ve been using the humidor for about two months and I’ll analyze the unit based on the set up, determining if the product works as advertised and wrap it up with an overall conclusion.

Evaluation

Setup – Setup was a breeze. I followed the manufacturing suggested guidelines as needed. Adding distilled water into the included moisture container and letting it sit for 24 hours was all that was needed to reach my desired relative humidity of 68. I chose to add the entire stock of cigars at one time. This did not cause the humidity to alter. My moisture container has been bone dry for the last month or so but the humidity has kept steady at 68 (plus or minus 1 rh) the entire time. This leads me to believe the seal on the unit is rock solid.

As Advertised? – Based on the NewAir website’s Key Features I’ll have my take on if the features are as advertised.

  • Opti-Temp™ heats and cools to maintain consistent temperature year-round: Agree, to a certain extent
    • The cooling feature seems to work a lot faster than the heating feature. With the ambient temperature and humidor at 65 degrees F, I dialed up the controls to 74 degrees F and the unit took close to an hour to reach the temperature.
  • Holds up to 400 individually wrapped or boxed cigars for serious collectors: Agree
    • Given a mix of boxes and loose singles for the drawers, it’s pretty close to the 400 as stated. I was able to fit about 11 boxes of 25 cigars and about 110 cigars into the singles drawers.
  • Pin-point accurate thermostat adjusts temperature in 1 degree increments: Agree
  • Removable, adjustable Spanish cedar shelves and drawers enhance flavor and aroma: Unsure
    • I’m unsure about enhancement of flavors and aromas but one thing to note is the removable shelving often times stick so it takes a little finessing to loosen them.
  • Lock and key helps you protect your collection: Sure
    • Don’t steal my cigars.

Conclusion

Overall, the unit works as advertised, so to that extent it is a recommendation. It’s quite a bit to spend on a 400 count humidor, but if referencing against customized temperature controlled units in the market, this is the better deal but you won’t get a “furniture piece.” Also, if you are in an area in which the weather is rather seasonal, this will be a good solution (to the extent the ambient temperature is between 50 to 80 degrees F). I do however wish this was not a limitation, as at times, especially in the summer, I’d like to leave my house warmer than suggested. Unfortunately, this is the nature of all temperature controlled humidors in the current market. With all that said, I’d recommend the unit. I just hope you don’t get the cigar bug and quickly outpace the max storage (of course you will though).
