Pre-light Experience

Seth: The Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro is firmly pressed and silky in texture. There are few veins present throughout the wrapper, but those present are medium in size. The triple cap is a little rough on the cigar. Coloring is that of espresso beans. Dark maduro. Aromas of tobacco, spices and wood.
John: The Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro has a firm box-pressed shape with a darker maduro-shaded wrapper. I weighed the cigar at 14.0 grams and measured the humidity at 62.3% with the HumidiMeter Pro. Aromas from the wrapper were a combination of stale wood with faint hay and barnyard underneath. From the foot, I was picking up mild tobacco, hay and earth.
Jiunn: The Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro has a dull, near Colorado maduro wrapper shade. The wrapper is not only dull but incredibly fragile. Veins are well pressed, seams tight, soft box press bunch and roll is done well, and the head is well wrapped and capped. Pre-light aromas tell of cedar and barnyard.

First Third

Seth: The first third begins with mineral, tobacco, dried wood, espresso and black pepper notes. It’s on the dryer side of the spectrum and lacks balance. Medium-full in strength and body.
John: The first third gets going with light-plus strength sweetness, followed by wood at a similar strength. Wood and earth combine on the finish. A few puffs in, some delayed light-to-mild spices come into the post draw. Shortly after, tannic wood moves into the center of the profile, and as the first third continues to evolve, leather joins the post draw. Wood begins leading off as the first third progresses, with musty wood defining the post draw by the end of the third.
Jiunn: The first third’s flavor profile is odd and unbalanced. There’s a weird grassiness in dehydrated vegetables and hay. Following close by is honey sweetness and cocoa. The retrohale is good with mixed nuts and spicy cedar. The finish is long with that same weird grassiness but with added cardboard. Strength and body is medium.

Second Third

Seth: The second third shows more mineral and pepper notes. Dried wood, espresso and earth are present. Still on the dryer side of the spectrum. Again, medium-full in strength and body.
John: The second third opens with wood, which gains tannins throughout the profile at medium-minus strength into both the finish and the retrohale. There is a creamier tobacco presence through the retrohale during this portion. As the second third settles in, light-plus strength baking spices and sweet tobacco join the wood already present in the retrohale. Some earth breaks into the retrohale as the cigar moves toward the halfway point. By the time the cigar reaches the halfway mark, some bread notes become present in the retrohale.
Jiunn: The second third’s flavors become more general. It’s still led by the same odd grassiness but now the sweetness and creaminess tastes more of a glob of flavors instead of distinct. Strength and body remains medium.

Final Third

Seth: The final third delivers a shot of espresso and mineral notes. It is rather unpleasant, and followed by dry tobacco, wood and black pepper notes. Bitter and harsh. Medium-full to full in strength and body.
John: The last third gets going with creamy wood and earth, while the finish is completely defined by wood that takes on increasingly tannic accents. The profile becomes more earth-forward as the cigar continues toward the halfway point of the final third. Through the bottom half, some malty sweetness attempts to join the profile but is largely pushed aside by the earth.
Jiunn: The final third’s flavors are very similar to the second third. The only difference is a bit more spice on the mouth draws via spicy cedar. But overall it’s still the same unique and funky grassiness with general sweetness and creaminess. Strength and body finishes the same medium.

Burn

Seth: The burn was average throughout. At times good, but at other times off.
John: The burn started straight but appeared to threaten stalling early on. It became wavy into the second third. In the last third, the burn became uneven and formed a canoe that required a touch-up to correct.
Jiunn: Excellent burn performance with solid ashes, even burn and ample smoke production.

Draw

Seth: The draw on the cigar was a little snug throughout the cigar.
John: I measured the draw at 40 inches of water with the Cigar Medics draw machine. Subjectively, I found the draw to be approximately ½ to 1 notch resistant, placing it firmly in the ideal range for an Amazing draw rating.
Jiunn: The draw was also excellent, being the ideal balance of air flow and resistance.

Overall

Seth: This Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro was not a good cigar. The first third was average at best, and then it went downhill quickly. It’s like they tried to make a strong and dark profile cigar. The cigar became harsh and bitter, and the final third was unbearable. I’m not going to even talk about the burn and draw, because that has no place with this review. This was simply a bad cigar.
John: This cigar delivers a fairly consistent experience from start to finish, though it never quite finds a moment where the profile elevates beyond its baseline. The first third introduces a mix of sweetness, wood and earth that sets expectations for a balanced but restrained smoke. However, as tannins and mustiness begin to assert themselves, the profile gradually shifts toward a drier and more earth-driven direction. The second third is arguably the most complete portion of the cigar, with creamy tobacco and baking spices providing some contrast to the otherwise wood-heavy core. Unfortunately, those elements remain subtle and never fully take control. Bread and sweetness appear briefly but feel more like supporting notes than meaningful transitions. By the final third, earth and tannic wood dominate the experience, with only fleeting hints of malty sweetness attempting to soften the profile. Construction overall was nearly perfect, with a minor correction required in the last third, and a draw that was perfect. In the end, this Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro is a cigar that performs competently but predictably. It maintains balance and avoids major flaws, yet it doesn’t offer enough progression or depth to stand out. As such, it settles comfortably into Average territory. It’s a serviceable smoke that may satisfy in the moment but is unlikely to linger in memory once finished. Total smoking time was 1 hour and 37 minutes.
Jiunn: A cigar that doesn’t look the part and it certainly doesn’t taste the part. The Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary Toro didn’t have much going for it with its dull and fragile wrapper and tasting notes that ranged from odd to unbalanced, and straight up weird. This is not my cup of tea to any extent.
