Pre-light Experience

Aaron: The wrapper on the Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto is light brown and has a network of lightly raised veins. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. There are three bands, all in a white, dark grey and gold color combination. The primary band denotes the line, while the secondary band denotes the company and the foot band carries the company logo. The aroma from the wrapper is a mix of cedar and damp earth, while the foot brings cedar and breadiness. The pre-light draw brings airy cedar with light amounts of floral notes and dusty earth.
Seth: The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto is finished with a good number of bands sporting the colors of white, blue and gold. Underneath them lies a classic Natural wrapper. Coloring is that of soft brown. Lightly roasted coffee beans. The cigar has a fine, gritty texture and visible veins throughout that are small to medium in size. There is a nice firmness with the cigar and a well applied cap. Aromas of sweet earth, fruits, warm spices, leather and tobacco. Woody notes on the wrapper.
John: The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto comes in cellophane and has a UPC sticker that includes the cigar information, along with a tear tab so it remains intact when the cellophane is opened. There are three bands, a primary Dark Star band, a thin Rocky Patel secondary band and finally a foot band with the ‘RP’ logo and two stars on either side. I weighed the cigar at 13.6 grams and measured the humidity with the HumidiMeter Pro at 62.1%. Aromas from the wrapper included sweet bread and tobacco. Out of the foot, I am picking up tea, tobacco and wood.
Jiunn: The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto has a Colorado wrapper shade. Wrapper quality seems ok, as it’s dull and a bit lifeless. Veins are well pressed, seams tight, bunch and roll even and the head is well wrapped and capped. Pre-light aromas provide cedar, stinky feet/cheese and roasted nuts.

First Third

Aaron: The cigar begins with toasted walnut and some earth and black pepper. At a quarter inch in, some mustiness joins the profile. The retrohale is toasted walnut, black pepper and light earth. At an inch in, the mustiness is not too far behind the toasted walnut. As the third comes to a close, the toasted walnut is a bit ahead of the mustiness, with a smooth black pepper in the middle and some earth in the background. The strength was slightly below medium.
Seth: The first third starts out with this core flavor profile of soft tobacco and earth. There are some faint spice notes present, and it has a graham cracker, wood and toasty finish. Around medium in strength and body.
John: My initial flavor impressions were sweet wood, cream and a combination of tobacco, hay and wood through the finish. The retrohale takes on some light plus baking spices and those same spices are present on the post draw. As the first third settles in, earth and wood come join the post draw and all the flavors, including the spices, move up to medium strength. By one inch into the review, the spices on the retrohale have also moved up to medium. Sweet wood joins the finish as it continues, and the baking spices on the retrohale and post draw continue to be intense pushing over medium.
Jiunn: The first third shows nutty and sweetness with toasted mixed nuts and stale cedar. The stale cedar heavily weighs on the palate. On the retrohale, there’s a nice peppery dried red chilis and tart cherries. Strength and body is medium.

Second Third

Aaron: As the second third begins, a light creaminess becomes present. At a quarter inch in, a light bitterness is now supporting the toasted walnut. At a half inch in, the earth picks up a bit. The retrohale is now toasted walnut, mustiness and earth. As the third comes to a close, the toasted walnut is just ahead of the mustiness, with smooth black pepper and earth in the middle and some creaminess and bitterness in the background. The strength bumped up to medium.
Seth: The second third continues to deliver that flavor profile of soft tobacco and earth. Bits of cream with faint spices. Graham cracker, wood and toast on the finish. Medium in strength and body.
John: The second third opens with creamy spices, wood and medium to medium-full strength pepper in the center of the profile. That profile remains consistent and stable in strength through the remainder of the second third.
Jiunn: The tart cherries now seep through on the mouth draws, making the profile that much more dynamic and tastier. The same levels of mixed nuts and stale cedar persists. Strength is nearing medium-full, while body stays at a consistent medium.

Final Third

Aaron: As the final third begins, the mustiness drops back a bit. At a half inch in, the earth is now right behind the toasted walnut. The retrohale remains toasted walnut, mustiness and earth. At an inch in, the black pepper mellows a bit. As the cigar wraps up, the toasted walnut is just ahead of the earth, with smooth black pepper and mustiness a bit behind and light amounts of creaminess and bitterness in the background. The strength remained at medium.
Seth: The final third is identical to that of the second. Nice smoking cigar. Medium in strength and body.
John: My last third experience kicks off with creamy, dry wood, and elements of dry earth at the end of the draw and lingering almost the entire time between each puff. Wood moves up and defines the center of the profile as the last third settles in. Creaminess falls away by the halfway point with wood defining the remainder of the review.
Jiunn: The final third shows increasing stale cedar, especially on the finish, overshadowing the toasted mixed nuts and tart cherries. Further, strength ramps to a consistent medium-full (body still medium).

Burn

Aaron: The burn line was straight throughout and the ash held on in one inch increments.
Seth: Nice burn from start to finish.
John: The burn starts out relatively straight through the first third. Some waviness is present in the bottom of the second third but never requires intervention. The burn is mostly straight through the last third.
Jiunn: Ideal burn performance. Even burn, tight ashes and cool burning temperature.

Draw

Aaron: The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Seth: Nice draw from start to finish. Maybe a little loose for me.
John: The draw was at most 1/2 of a notch towards the open spectrum which puts the draw in the ideal range between open and resistant.
Jiunn: Ideal draw performance as well, giving the best of air flow and resistance.

Overall

Aaron: The cigar began with toasted walnut and some earth and black pepper. Some mustiness joined in fairly quickly. The second third sees some light creaminess and light bitterness join in. The final third sees the earth pick up and the mustiness and black pepper drop back a bit. Construction was perfect. The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto had a nice start, with the fairly unique toasted walnut driving the profile. The second third dropped a level as the overall profile lost the balance it had previously and maintained that the rest of the way. This is an interesting cigar that I might come back to from time to time. I’d also be interested in seeing how some of the other vitolas perform as the price points are fairly attractive.
Seth: The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto is a funky offering from Rocky Patel. It’s Honduran heavy, but I think the qualities that make the blend approachable and somewhat pop are the Nicaraguan and Paraguayan tobacco. It was somewhat lacking, but not unpleasant. An easy smoke that many smokers could approach. The price is solid as well for 2024. I would smoke it again, but I would not seek it out. Smoke it at an event.
John: The Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto presents an appealing pre-light experience with multiple bands and an attractive looking wrapper. Once the review started, however, I found the overall profile to be consistently average with none of the flavor combinations coming together in an engaging way and the relatively intense pepper to be a distraction. The draw was perfect and the burn was perfect through the review. There is a wide assortment of Rocky Patel cigars that I enjoy, but the Dark Star Robusto isn’t one of the choices I would return to. Total smoking time was 1 hour and 41 minutes.
Jiunn: Hey, this Honduran Corojo is purdy good. It has that nice pepper spice through the nostrils, but the accompanying depth of stone fruit and mixed nuts wraps it up very well. I wasn’t a big fan of the stale cedar in general, but for the majority of the cigar it was tampered quite well. No doubt will be happy to smoke this Rocky Patel Dark Star Robusto again.
