Pre-light Experience

The wrapper on the Romeo y Julieta Envy Amulet is on the darker side of medium brown and has some darker marbling along with some decently raised veins. The seams are raised in some areas while the caps are very well applied. There are two bands, with the primary being gold, black and green and denoting the brand and line. The secondary band is green and silver and has an image of an eye on it. The aroma from the wrapper is a general wood note along with a light sweetness. The foot aroma brings cedar, earth and mild spice. The pre-light draw brings cedar and floral sweetness along with a mild spiciness on my lips.

First Third

The cigar begins with toasted cedar, dry earth, black pepper and light chalkiness. At a half inch in, the black pepper mellows a bit and the chalkiness is barely hanging on. The retrohale is toasted cedar, dusty earth and lightly zingy black pepper. At an inch and a quarter, the chalkiness is gone. At an inch and a half in, the toast level increases a bit. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the dry earth with black pepper a fair bit behind. The strength was right at medium.

Second Third

As the second third begins, the dry earth is now even with the toasted cedar up front. At a half inch in, the overall profile is a bit dry. At an inch in, the toast is now pretty heavy and a wood bitterness has joined in. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and dry earth. At an inch and a quarter, the black pepper is light in the background. As the third comes to a close, the profile is heavily toasted cedar and dry earth up front with wood bitterness and black pepper in the background. The strength bumped up to slightly above medium.

Final Third

As the final third begins, the black pepper is really now only present lightly on the finish. The retrohale is now toasted cedar, dry earth and light black pepper. At an inch and a quarter, the heavy toast transitions to light char. As the cigar wraps up, the profile is light charred cedar and dry earth with wood bitterness in the background. The strength remained at slightly above medium.

Burn

The burn was a bit wavy at times, but never needed any intervention. The ash held on in near two inch increments.

Draw

The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.

Overall

The cigar began with toasted cedar, dry earth, black pepper and light chalkiness. The chalkiness departed a bit later. The second third saw the toast level become pretty heavy. The final third saw the black pepper depart and the heavy toast transitioned to light char. The Romeo y Julieta Envy Amulet had an average flavor profile through the first two thirds with a dry profile focused around toasted cedar, dry earth and black pepper. The final third dropped a level as the char appeared. Overall, I wasn’t impressed with this cigar as the flavor profile was pretty mundane and didn’t finish well. Not a cigar I’d see myself returning to.
