Pre-light Experience
The wrapper on the Rocky Patel The Edge Corojo Toro is light brown, but has some darker spots and has some decently raised veins. The seams are smooth and the head is well finished. The band is at the foot and is an off-white with gold lettering and denotes the brand and line. The wrapper variation you need to get from the sticker on the cellophane. The aroma from the wrapper is an even mix of musty cedar and menthol, while the foot brings the same combination, just tipped much more towards the musty cedar. The pre-light draw is musty, aged cedar and some earth.
First Third
The cigar begins with toasted cedar, earth and mild black pepper. At a quarter inch in, the black pepper has departed. At three quarters of an inch in, a light wood bitterness becomes present. The retrohale is an even mix of toasted cedar and earth. At an inch and a quarter, a light creaminess joins the profile. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth, with light amounts of wood bitterness and creaminess in the background. The strength was slightly below medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the wood bitterness increases a bit. At a half inch in, black pepper rejoins the profile, but at a fuller level as it sits in the middle of the profile. The retrohale is now toasted cedar, earth, lightly zingy black pepper and some creaminess. As the third comes to a close, the toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth, with black pepper in the middle of the profile. The wood bitterness is a bit further back, with some creaminess in the background. The strength moved up to medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, the earth becomes even with the toasted cedar up front, and the black pepper mellows a bit. At a half inch in, the wood bitterness increases some more, and the pepper is now pretty light. The retrohale is now toasted cedar and earth, with a little wood bitterness. As the cigar wraps up, the toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with wood bitterness in the middle of the profile. The black pepper is a bit further behind and there is some light creaminess in the background. The strength remained at medium.
Burn
The burn was straight throughout, and the ash held on in inch and a quarter increments.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with toasted cedar, earth and mild black pepper. The black pepper departed fairly quickly and then some wood bitterness joined in. Later, some light creaminess joined. The second third saw the wood bitterness increase a bit. The black pepper then rejoined the middle of the profile. The final third saw the earth become even with the toasted cedar up front and the black pepper mellowed a bit. Later, the wood bitterness increased and the pepper mellowed some more. Construction was absolutely perfect. The Rocky Patel The Edge Corojo Toro started pretty average, focused around the toasted cedar and earth. It increased in enjoyment in the second third as the black pepper returned, rounding out the profile a bit more. It took a step back in the final third as the wood bitterness increased and the pepper mellowed. This is a serviceable lower priced offering. While I wouldn’t see myself really coming back to it with any frequency, for those that like a cedar and earth flavor combination and prefer lower cost offerings, this might fit the bill.
