Pre-light Experience
The Punch Dad’s Home Movies has a square press to it, with a wrapper that is medium brown, with some darker areas and carries a network of lightly raised veins. The seams are smooth and the caps well applied. The band is white, black and red and denotes the line name on front, with an image of Mr. Punch and the brand name and line initials on the side. The aroma from the wrapper is a light mix of wood and earth, while the foot brings cedar and white pepper. The pre-light draw brings a vegetal and wood mixture along with a mild spice.
First Third
The cigar begins with decently toasted cedar along with some black pepper and light earth. At a half inch in, the black pepper and earth pick up a bit. The retrohale is toasted cedar, earth and mild black pepper. At three quarters of an inch in, a bit of meatiness joins the profile. At an inch and a quarter, the toast level of the cedar is pretty heavy while the black pepper has mellowed a bit. As the third comes to a close, the heavily toasted cedar is up front, with earth a bit behind, black pepper just past the middle and some meatiness in the background. The strength was slightly above medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the earth edges a bit closer to the front of the profile as the black pepper mellows a bit more. The retrohale is now just heavily toasted cedar and earth. At an inch in, the black pepper is now very mellow and the overall profile is a bit dry. As the third comes to a close, the heavily toasted cedar is just ahead of the earth with black pepper in the back half of the profile and light meatiness in the background. The strength remained at slightly above medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, the earth is now even with the heavily toasted cedar up front. At a half inch in, the black pepper picks back up to the middle of the profile. The retrohale remains just heavily toasted cedar and earth. As the cigar wraps up, the heavily toasted cedar and earth are even up front, with black pepper in the middle and light meatiness in the background. The strength bumped up to medium-full.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with decently toasted cedar along with some black pepper and light earth. Some meatiness joined in a bit later and the toast level of the cedar became pretty heavy. The second third saw the earth increase as the black pepper mellowed. The final third saw the earth become even with the heavily toasted cedar up front and the black pepper picked back up. The construction was absolutely perfect. The Punch Dad’s Home Movies had an average flavor profile throughout, focused around the heavily toasted cedar, earth and black pepper. Not a very exciting cigar and not something I’d see myself coming back to. The price point is very attractive though, so it’s worth it to try one just to see what you think.
