Pre-light Experience
The wrapper on the La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Natural Chisel is light brown, but has a darker splotchiness in the lower half. There are some thick, raised veins present, the seams are a bit raised and the signature chisel head is well finished. The band is black, gold, red and white and denotes the company and line. The aroma from the wrapper is a light mix of cedar and earth, while the foot brings spice cake, sweet stone fruit and some cedar. The pre-light draw brings very spicy cedar and earth, along with a mid-level spiciness on my lips.
First Third
The cigar begins with a creamy, lightly musty, toasted cedar, along with some earth and black pepper. At a half inch in, the black pepper increases a fair amount and exhibits a very long finish. The retrohale is creamy, musty, toasted cedar, along with black pepper and mild earth. At an inch and a quarter, the black pepper mellows a bit. As the third comes to a close, the creamy, musty, toasted cedar is up front, with black pepper in the middle of the profile and some earth in the back half. The strength was right at medium.
Second Third
As the second third begins, the mustiness increases a bit. At a half inch in, the pepper has mellowed to become even with the earth in the back half of the profile. At an inch in, the black pepper picks back up a bit. The retrohale remains creamy, musty, toasted cedar, along with black pepper and mild earth. At an inch and a half in, the black pepper increases a fair amount. As the third comes to a close, the creamy, musty, toasted cedar is up front, with black pepper a bit behind and some earth in the back half. The strength remained at medium.
Final Third
As the final third begins, a light vegetal note joins the profile. At a half inch in, the vegetal note increases a bit. The retrohale is now creamy, musty, toasted cedar, with the vegetal note and black pepper. At an inch in, some chalkiness joins the middle of the profile. At an inch and a half in, the vegetal note gains a bitterness. As the cigar wraps up, the creamy, musty, toasted cedar is up front, with black pepper a bit behind, vegetal bitterness and chalkiness in the middle of the profile and some earth in the back half. The strength bumped up to slightly above medium.
Draw
The draw was perfect, with just the right amount of resistance that I prefer.
Overall
The cigar began with a creamy, lightly musty, toasted cedar, along with some earth and black pepper. The pepper increased fairly quickly and then later mellowed a bit. The second third saw the mustiness increase a bit and the pepper mellowed some more. Later, the black pepper increased again. The final third saw a vegetal note join in and then later it gained a bitterness. Some chalkiness also joined in. The La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero Natural Chisel had a nice start, with a smooth combination of flavors. It took a step down in the second third as the pepper moved around a fair amount and maintained that level the rest of the way. I really enjoy the Chisel head, but the cigar wasn’t all that interesting past the first third. I don’t see myself really coming back to this cigar.
