Appearance
The Muskoka Summerweiss Tropical Wheat comes in a tall can, with orange on yellow coloring, and summer themed images. It has a giant mosquito, a cano, a steamboat and a man sitting on a chair on a boat dock. The beer pours a hazy orange or grapefruit color, with a medium, white, fluffy head.
Aroma
Nosing the beer, I’m immediately getting sweet citrus, with some green hoppy characters underneath. More careful examination reveals orange rind and grapefruit.
Flavor
Sweet and sour orange citrus flavors up front, that give way to the citrus rind I was picking up on the aromas. My immediate thought is that this is a crushable summer beer. As the beer warms up, there is some mango mixing in with the orange, along with some astringent grapefruit character.
Balance
The citrus, rind, astringency and sweetness don’t seem to harmonize very well throughout the beer experience. They aren’t subpar, they just don’t balance enough to rate them good.
Finish
That rind and astringent grapefruit character are what carry the beer into the finish. Initially it’s interesting, but that interest quickly fades as the finish doesn’t seem to develop beyond that.
Overall
Although the Muskoka Summerweiss Tropical Wheat scored average in the categories of finish and balance, the flavor is good. I would absolutely see myself pounding 3-4 of these on a patio, during a hot summer day, without hesitation.
